In the good old days, hobbies ranged from coin and stamp collection to drawing, dancing, and making music. There is no doubt that the hobbies that most of us cherished while we were kids, had some part in helping us grow into who we are now. From the habit of savings that we got from collecting valuables to flourishing our creative side through art, we can say that the hobbies that we took up were the gateway to our primary means of leisure and life skill development.

But now, the times have changed and our children have a wide array of new hobbies that they can take up thanks to the development of novel technology. While the traditional hobbies that we are used to seeing still hold a candle in guiding a child’s development, the newer ones also have a set of advantages going their way. The prime among these are STEM knowledge that can greatly help them in the future; and of course, accessibility.

Expand your comfort zones, from the comfort of your own four walls

Accessibility is an important element of the technology-related hobbies that children can indulge into; especially amidst this pandemic. Children can have their way with the activities that interest them, all the while being in a safe place while doing them. The advantages of having technological proficiency in the 21st century are not something that needs to be further elaborated. Besides, most of the activities that we are about to discuss are extremely fun, and the children are very likely to have a great time doing them!

Programming

Yes. Children can learn programming even at a young age. We want to discuss programming as the first hobby in this article because it is one of the most rewarding and entertaining activities that your child can get into while they are still young. Learning to code is an art that takes time to master, and once the children have developed a strong command over it, they will be able to create whatever they wish, with a computer. The benefits of learning to code at a young age have been discussed through articles and papers across the globe and it is considered as one of the best hobbies to help children in developing their creativity, problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking abilities. It is also one of the most resource-rich hobbies on the list because there is a plethora of materials and platforms online that children can use to learn the basics of programming.

Web Designing

With the introduction of resources like WordPress, web design has become extremely beginner-friendly. Think about this for a second; an empty web page is just like an empty canvas, it can be a place for children to show their creativity. Designing the layout of a website, the color pattern that they should be using, and arranging the contents are all places that children can let loose and make their imagination run wild. Further, learning a skill such as a web designing can only benefit kids, because it is a skill that they can turn into a profession in the future.

Play Minecraft!

Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Mojang. Since its release in 2009, the game has captured the minds of children and filled them with creativity and imagination. Minecraft can be compared to legos, with their block-based building and creation mechanics; but compared to the former, the game brings about a lot of complexity to how things should be made instead of just taking a block and just joining it with another. Educational benefits of the game are well regarded, with experts saying that it can enhance creativity, problem-solving, self-direction, collaboration, and other life skills among children. The entertainment value of the game has also a great impact in helping it to become a kid favorite.

Blogging

The ability to express yourself coherently and structurally is a skill that is of great importance in the new age. The online blogging culture can have a great impact on the cognitive development of your child because there they can find a space for sharing their stories, views and talk about whatever they deem interesting; they can read and explore the ideas shared by other bloggers in a field that they are mutually interested in. Taking up blogging as a hobby at a young age can help children to develop in them a spirit of expression and muck in with broadening their world views as well.

Learn to Create Digital Art

Much like traditional art, digital art is another platform that your child can use to express themselves and expand their imagination. But compared to the conventional method of creating art; digitized mode is much cheaper and cleaner. Children won’t run out of necessary resources that they need to create like different types of pencils, brushes, paints, and canvases. All you need is a compatible computer or tablet (or a drawing tablet if you’re feeling fancy) and you’re good to go for a long time. Digital artists are also going to be highly valued in the future not only for the quality of their work but also for their role in the front-end development of websites and videogames as well.

Create an Animation

With the introduction of groundbreaking new technologies in the field of creating animations, the process has become much simpler and less time-consuming. Children love to watch cartoons and video games, therefore, being able to create an animation that they wish to do is something that could fascinate them. With the introduction of software like Adobe character animator, children can design their models and make them animate at ease. The initiation of the software is very simple. You import the character that you made. Turn on your mic and camera. And the software will detect your facial expression and use that input to animate the character.

To conclude, there is a wide range of hobbies available for our children to experience and grow themselves with. It is our role to guide them towards their opportunities so that they can flourish by doing what they love.
